Umpiring
When to Begin
Children can commence umpiring from the age of about 12 years, depending on the abilities of the child. They must be confident and reliable to attend games, as substantial fines are issued by Fremantle Netball Assoc (FNA) , when umpires fail to attend games.
Children must ensure they have parental support to enable them to attend their allocated umpired games.
Beginner umpires will be allocated junior games at 8:00am or 9:00am, when the games are not too intense.
How to Begin
Umpires need to have a good understanding of the rules and the first step is to read a copy of the Official Rules Book. These can be purchased from the office at the FNA grounds for $14.00 or from most sports stores.
Once an understanding of the rules has been obtained then the Online Umpiring Exam can be attempted. This is a free exam and can be attempted as many times as required to pass. Once the exam has been passed an official certificate is produce. Once this proof of ability has been provided you can commence umpiring.
Support
Beginner umpires will be required to attend training sessions with the club to get them ready to umpire a game. This will include practice umpiring of other Rostrata teams at training. Once confident in their abilities, they will be allocated an official game to umpire. They will have a trained umpire "running" along side of them giving instructions, support and guidance during the game and this will continue until they are confident to tackle a game alone, however support will always be close at hand, should anything arise.
From here there is further training and development available to become Nationally Recognised and increase umpiring ability.
For more information and to register your interest, contact Brian Thomas, Rostrata Umpire Coordinator by sending an email to [email protected] or via the clubs Facebook site.
